The Supreme Court today ruled out that the Aadhar cards being
prepared by the Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) cannot be the
sole proof for government's various schemes.
The apex court said the government cannot make Aadhar cards mandatory for providing essential services like gas connections.
The top court further said that the cards should be voluntary and not mandatory.
The court issued the order after hearing a PIL seeking to examine legal sanctity of Aadhar.
Aadhar is UPA government's ambitious project. It is headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani.
